Basildon University Hospital is part of the Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation trust which serves a 405,000 population in south west Essex. Basildon hospital provides services around Essex such as acute medical services. These include the Essex Cardiothoracic Centre and Orsette Hospital. In 2004, the Basildon NHS Trust became one of the first NHS Foundation trusts. The trust has more than 4,000 staff members and over 10,000 public members.

The Essex centre provides several services for people who suffer from heart and lung problems. A skilled team of specialists delivers clinical services and clinical support services: cardiovascular services, thoracic surgery, interventional cardiology, cardia electrophysiology, cardia rehabilitation…. The CTC is also a major hub for cardiovascular and thoracic research, for which it is starting to earn an international reputation.
