Sunderland Eye Infirmary is one of the two acute hospitals which form the City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust. This Trust provides acute services for about 350,000 people in the Tyne and Wear and Durham areas. Sunderland Eye Infirmary delivers top-quality specialist services in eye surgery and particularly eye accident and emergency care.
The hospital also provide a full range of ophthalmology services, as well as treating children and adolescents. More than 8000 patients are admitted to the Sunderland Eye Infirmary every year.
Specialist eye hospital facilities include a cataract treatment unit, the glaucoma unit, the Haygarth ward, the Mayling diagnostic unit, the macular unit, a medical photography department, an opmetry department and an orthoptic department.
