Top Hospitals Methodology

The 30 best hospitals (with surgery units) have been ranked in accordance with a very strict methodology. We have used the most recent publicly-available data as of 1st April 2016; in this case, the statistics published by the Care Quality Commission and the corresponding NHS Choices Users’ score
A total of 1,988 hospitals with surgical services in Great Britain were assessed, but only those which scored 4 to 5 stars in the NHS Choices Users’ survey were retained.
We select hospitals in line with how they rank in terms of Quality and Safety of care (source: www.cqc.org.uk) which are given an overall rating on the basis of the following quality criteria:

• Safe
• Effective
• Caring
• Responsive
• Well-led

Establishments which fail to achieve an overall rating of either outstanding or good are excluded automatically.

In addition to this, the top-ranking hospitals received a rating for each individual category (5, 4.5 or 4 stars) in accordance with the number of patients who would recommend the hospital they have been treated in to their friends and family (source: www.nhs.uk/scorecard/pages/IndicatorFacts.aspx?MetricId=1550&OrgType=5).

In the event of a tie, the hospital with more patient reviews will be placed above the hospital with fewer reviews.
